It is time to put the Ocean first

World Oceans Day is an annual event observed on June 8th to raise global awareness about the importance of the ocean and promote sustainable practices for its protection. It provides an opportunity to emphasize the crucial role that Oceans play in our lives and to encourage individuals, communities, and organizations to take action to safeguard and conserve marine resources.

The Ocean is crucial for life on Earth, providing oxygen, biodiversity, and sustenance for billions of people. However, it is facing serious challenges. Overfishing has depleted fish populations, and coral reefs are being destroyed.

Did you know?

  • The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

  • Oceans absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming.

  • The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world.

  • The ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030

  • With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished.

We must strive for a sustainable balance with the ocean so as not to deplete its bounty any longer and protect its resources for future generations.

This year, the World Oceans Day theme is "Planet Ocean: tides are Changing". The annual event will be hosted by the United Nations in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global, and broadcast live.
